Letting go of beliefs

Let me tell you one thing. If you really wish to make some progress in your religious life, you must begin by not carrying any belief. If you wish to know the truth, you should not create any preconceived notions about it. You must approach truth in complete peace and emptiness, and without any preconceptions. Preconceived notions and biases dim and distort your vision. What you know then is not the truth but a projection of your own thinking. That way truth does not reveal itself to you, on the contrary you impose yourself on truth.

When there is no particular view or theory between you and the truth, what you will know then will be the truth. Otherwise you are not able to get out of the boundary of your mind and you go on knowing things as you want to know them. This is not knowledge, this is imagination.

Man has an unlimited power for imagination and this imagination alone is the wall between him and the truth. If you have preconceived ideas about God, truth and the soul, your mind will form an image of them and you will think that you have known something. But the reality is that you have known nothing and have wandered only in the realms of imagination. This is not seeing the truth, but a dream.

You know very well that your mind has an inexhaustible capacity for dreaming. Our desires show us things that do not exist at all. They create mirages: that which truly is becomes hidden and that which is not becomes apparent. But you will say that dreaming happens only in sleep. It is true that dreams happen only in sleep, but sleep can be induced, and in one sense you can be asleep while you are awake. Don't you daydream?

So, if you continuously create a particular idea of God or truth and, awake or asleep, are filled with the remembrance of these imaginings, then certainly a projection happens and it even becomes visible. It is nothing but an intensified daydream. There is nothing actually in front of your eyes, but what has been nourished and nurtured behind the eyes for a long time becomes visible. This is a projection; this is how dreams are seen, this is how the realization of truth based on pre-conceptions becomes possible.

A devotee of Christ sees Christ, a follower of Krishna sees Krishna and someone else's disciples sees someone else. By no means is this the vision or realization of God or of truth. This is a projection of one's own imagination because there cannot be two truths, two Gods. Truth is one and its realization is one, and one who wants to know truth must give up his countless concepts and imaginings.

I am not asking you to give up your concepts in favor of some other concept, I am asking you to give up all concepts as such. These very concepts are the lifeline of all the sects that exist in the name of religion, and because of this, there are many sects but there is no religion.

To know the truth it is necessary to forsake all theories about it, because only in such an un-biased, unprejudiced and therefore innocent state, can that which is be known. Where there is no pre-concept, no prior imagination, no prior expectation, is where no dreams form and the truth is realized. So, the discipline of truth-realization is not in fact the discipline of truth-realization, rather it is the discipline of dream-riddance.

It is not the realization of truth, it is simply freedom from hallucinations. That freedom is the realization of truth. We are lost in dreams, hence that which is, is almost an absence despite its constant presence.

Truth simply is, because what else is truth but that which is? It does not need to be brought from somewhere else. It is ever-present. But we are not present to it because we are lost in our dreams. No, it is not the truth we have to bring to ourselves, we have to bring ourselves to the truth. This is possible not by seeing more new dreams about God, but by doing away with all the dreams - by waking up.

Hence I said that the truth does not need imagination, but a realization that when the mind is free from all imagination it is then in the state of truth.
